PACIFIC JAZZ 12” LP – NEW PJ SERIES
PART FIVE - PJ-81 / PJ-10099

Several changes were made in this group of releases in the new Pacific Jazz PJ series.  A new logo was introduced on the LP jacket that nestled the letters “P” and “J” together.  The colors changed in concert with other colors used in the design of front of the jacket. The logo was modified with the release of PJ-91 to include the wording “A PRODUCT OF LIBERTY RECORDS” below the logo rectangle as seen in the examples below for PJ-91, PJ-92 and PJ-93.

Artists represented on this group of releases include: Les McCann & The Jazz Crusaders, Roy Haynes, The Jazz Crusaders, Les McCann, Joe Pass, Monty Alexander, The Gerald Wilson Orchestra, Bud Shank & His Brazilian Friends, Joao Donato, Les McCann & The Gerald Wilson Orchestra, Gil Fuller and The Monterey Jazz Festival Orchestra featuring Dizzy Gillespie, Albert Mangelsdorff, Clare Fischer, and The Jazz Crusaders.

The third change can be seen with the release of PJ-10092 where five digits are assigned to releases, 10000 series for mono releases and 20000 series for stereo releases.  The same five digit numbering scheme was used for releases in the WP-1400 and WP-1800 series as noted in recent additions to this blog for releases in those numerical series.  The logical progression for the next release following PJ-10099 would be PJ-10100 but this number was not assigned and part six will examine PJ-10101 through PJ-10120. The nestled logo would also migrate to the record label as seen in the last examples below.
